Characteristics
Horse chestnut is a plant very rich in flavonoids and escin.
Flavonoids are widely cited in scientific studies as vasoprotective molecules, which act on the vessels with different mechanisms of action:
• increase the sympathetic effect on the venous component;
• they inhibit prostaglandins and thromboxane A2, thus performing an anti-permeabilising action;
• inhibit pro-inflammatory mechanisms, such as activation of neutrophils and expression of adhesion molecules;
• improve the drainage function of the lymphatic network, thus performing an anti-oedematous action.
Escin, a blend of triterpene saponins, is much studied as:
• phlebotonics, thanks to the reduction of the activity of elastase and hyaluronidase (enzymes that attack the endothelium of the vessels and the extracellular matrix) and to the increase in the contractility of the venous muscle tissue;
• anti-exudative and anti-edema because it is transformed into a similar corticoid in the adrenal cortex;
• positive for inflammation, as it stimulates the synthesis of prostaglandin PGF2alpha and reduces the catabolism of mucopolysaccharides.
The following are not used for the preparation of the product: wheat, sugar, salt, starch, soy, milk derivatives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavourings.
