Food supplement containing L-lysine extracted from a natural source of molasses. L-lysine is an essential amino acid and must be introduced with the diet. Lysine together with vitamin C forms L-carnitine, an amino acid that helps convert fatty acids into energy by improving the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the cell's real energy plants. In its hydroxylated form, in the presence of vitamin C, it allows the correct synthesis of collagen, the protein that constitutes the scaffolding of connective tissues. Traditionally in the case of cold sores it is recommended to increase the dietary intake of lysine by reducing that of arginine; this last amino acid in fact seems to promote the replication of herpes viruses which synthesize proteins much richer in arginine than human ones.
