Carotenoids are fat-soluble pigments responsible for the red, orange and green colors of fruit and vegetables. The main dietary carotenoids are alpha and beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene and astaxanthin. Beta-carotene is responsible for the coloring of carrots and lycopene is present as a red pigment mainly in tomatoes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the main components of the macular reticular pigment in which they filter high-energy light and allow for both day and night vision. Formulation containing beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene. Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A, a vitamin known to be useful for maintaining normal skin and mucous membranes and for maintaining normal vision.
