Smoking during pregnancy carries risks for the baby, such as poor growth before birth, premature birth or stillbirth. Quitting smoking is the best thing to do for your health and that of your baby. The sooner you quit smoking, the better. Ideally, if you are pregnant, you should stop smoking without using NST. However, if she has tried and failed, NSN may be recommended by healthcare professionals as an aid to quitting smoking as it is better for the developing fetus than cigarette smoking. The decision to use NST should be made as early as possible during pregnancy. It should aim to only use it for 2-3 months. Remember that the most important thing is to stop smoking. Products such as lozenges may be preferable to nicotine patches, as you do not take nicotine continuously with the lozenges. However, the use of the patches may be preferable if you suffer from nausea or vomiting.
If you are breastfeeding, tobacco smoke causes breathing difficulties and other problems for the infant. The ideal would be to quit smoking without using NST. However, if you have tried and failed, your healthcare professional may advise you to use NST to quit smoking. If you have to use NSN to help you quit smoking, the amount of nicotine your baby can take is low and much less harmful than secondhand smoke. It is best to use NST products that are taken a few times a day (such as gums or pads instead of patches). Also, it is best to breastfeed just before taking the product, in order to expose the baby to the least amount of nicotine possible.
