Boswellia serrata
Tree native to India from which a gum resin consisting of 16% of an essential oil containing Terpenes, boswellic acids and polysaccharides must be extracted. Boswellic acids act by inhibiting lipoxygenase, an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of leukotrienes; in particular, keto-B-boswellic acid inhibits the activity of leukocyte elastase, an enzyme involved in chronic inflammatory processes. Boswellic acids in addition to the well-known antiarthritic activity, are endowed with a marked tropism for the mucous membranes, finding indications in all inflammatory forms of the intestinal mucosa (colitis, gut leaky syndrom, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease). Although no clear cases of drug interactions are reported in the literature, only two patients, 64 and 73 years old, respectively, on anticoagulant treatment with warfarin experienced elevated prothrombin time values. This data indicates the need to pay attention to the use of Boswellia in patients on anticoagulant treatment. Furthermore, Boswellia is able to inhibit some isoenzymes of cytochrome p450 in particular (CYP3A4, 2C9 AND 2C19). Therefore, even if there are no reliable data on this, it is good practice to pay attention to the simultaneous use of drugs that are metabolized by these isoenzymes (colecoxib, diclofenac, ibiprofen, naproxen, piroxicam).
Turmeric
Perennial herbaceous plant with a characteristic yellow rhizome, native to southern Asia, India and Indonesia. Always used for its multiple pharmacological activities. The essential oil contains monicyclic sesquiterpenes, carbides (zingibrene, B - and D-curcumene, ar-curcumene), oxygenated derivatives (turmerone, arturmerone, zingibrene, curcuminoids such as turmeric), starch, proteins, glucose, fructose and vitamin C. It a marked digestive activity in choleretic and cholagogue, hepatoprotector especially against hepatotoxic drugs and alcohol, reduces plasma cholesterol levels, has antibacterial and antifungal, antiallergic and anti-inflammatory action. Turmeric is also able to inhibit some cytochrome P450 isoenzymes, such as CYP3A4 and 2C9, therefore pay attention to patients who use drugs metabolizing by these isoenzymes.
Passiflora incarnata
Passiflora, or passion flower, is a plant native to the tropical regions of South America. The leaves and the aerial parts are used. Contains alkaloids, armane, passiflorine, apigenin, luteolin, quercetol, phytosterols, phenolic acids, coumarins, cyanogenic heterosides, traces of essential oil; flavonoids, vetexin, isovitexin, saponaria, rutin, quercitin. Spasmolytic, sedative action. Potentiates the effect of tranquilizers, dilating coronary heart. Passionflower is indicated in anxiety, insomnia, neurosis, anxieties, menopause syndrome, gastrointestinal antispasmodics, digestive stress disorders, colitis, neurovegetative dystonias, tachycardia. At therapeutic dosages, no side effects are reported.
Selenium
It is a nonmetal discovered by the chemist Berzelius in 1817, commonly presented in a crystalline form with a gray color and metallic appearance. It is an essential trace element, it carries out a cellular antioxidant action to protect against free radicals and to prevent degenerative diseases. It has a clear antioxidant action in synergy with vitamin E (an essential component of glutathione-peroxidase which, together with tocopherol, contributes to the maintenance of the anatomical functional integrity of the cell wall). Its main functions are: increase in glutation-peroxidase, antioxidant, reinforcement of the immune defenses prevention in degenerative diseases.
Inulin
It is a polysaccharide carbohydrate (fructose and glucose polysaccharides and oligosaccharides) extracted from fruit and vegetables that is well tolerated by the digestive system. Rebalances the intestinal ecosystem by promoting the growth of healthy bacteria for the intestine such as bifidus bacteria and bacterioides, regulates intestinal functions, helps reduce LDL cholesterol levels. In particular, the inulin extracted from chicory seems to favor intestinal absorption of calcium.
Lactobacillus acidophylus (over 6 billion live cells per gram)
It is essential to rebalance the intestinal bacterial flora, in particular it hinders the putrefactive processes of the digestive tract, which cause bad breath and flatulence. Acidophylus also controls Candida albicans, which is responsible for numerous vaginal and oral diseases.
