Vitamin C-based food supplement
Of all the Vitamins, Vitamin C is the most unstable and easily degrades: it is soluble in water, photosensitive and is damaged by oxidizing agents. It is found mainly in the pituitary, adrenal glands, lens, liver and brain. The body is unable to produce Vitamin C and must therefore obtain it through food. To maintain a correct level of Vitamin C in the blood it is necessary to take it constantly and if the diet does not provide it in adequate doses, it must be supplemented with special products.
Vitamin C deficiency is found in particular in some categories of people. Here are some people at risk of Vitamin C deficiency:
• smokers
• pregnant women
• breastfeeding women
• adolescents
• Senior citizens
• alcoholics
• subjects under stress
• workers exposed to heavy metals
• diabetics
A Vitamin C deficiency can also be due to the following factors: toxic gases, environmental pollution and drugs. Vitamin deficiency is frequent and can often be traced back to modern nutrition, as foods lose a large part of their vitamin content during industrial processing.
Signs of Vitamin C deficiency are: shortness of breath, difficult digestion, capillary fragility (cause of gingival bleeding and cause of pinpoint bleeding), skin problems, weakening of the dental enamel, tendency to bruise, swollen or painful joints, nosebleeds, anemia , decreased resistance to infections. Teeth can become looser and lose fillings. Even minimal deficiencies in Vitamin C can cause gum disease that allows bacteria and toxic substances to penetrate the tissues causing periodontal disease.
The functions of Vitamin C
• Antioxidant action: it binds to free radicals, inactivating them and preventing the chain reaction following oxidative processes.
• Contributes to the normal functioning of the body's defenses thanks to the stimulating action on leukocytes. In particular, it stimulates phagocytic action.
• Contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage, gums, skin and teeth.
• Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
