Suppositories for rectal use based on glycerol.

Therapeutic indications

Glycerol Marco Viti Suppositories Adults contains the active ingredient glycerol which belongs to the category of laxative medicines, used to facilitate the expulsion of faeces. This medicine is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation. Contact your doctor if you do not notice any improvement or if you notice a worsening of your symptoms after 7 days.

Dosage and posology

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

The correct dose is the minimum sufficient to produce an easy evacuation. Use the minimum recommended doses initially. Glycerol Marco Viti suppositories Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age: the recommended dose is 1 adult suppository as needed up to a maximum of 2 suppositories per day. Remove the suppository from its container and moisten it, if necessary, to facilitate rectal introduction. If the suppositories seem too soft, put the containers in cold water before opening them.

Overdose

If you use this medicine too often, for too long or in excessive amounts, you may experience abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea causing loss of fluids, minerals (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients that need to be replaced. Symptoms of altered balance of salts in the body (electrolyte imbalance) are: thirst, vomiting, weakness, swelling (edema), bone problems (osteomalacia) and lowering of a protein present in the blood, albumin ( hypoalbuminemia). In case of accidental ingestion / intake of an excessive dose of Marco Viti glycerol, notify your doctor immediately or contact the nearest hospital. Contraindications

Do not use Marco Viti Glycerol suppositories:

• if you are allergic to glycerol to any of the other ingredients of this medicine;
• if you suffer from acute abdominal pain or of unknown origin;
• if you feel sick or vomit;
• if you suffer from intestinal obstruction or narrowing (stricture);
• if you suffer from rectal bleeding of unknown origin;
• if you suffer from swelling of the blood vessels around the anus (acute haemorrhoidal crisis) with pain and bleeding;
• if you are severely dehydrated.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following side effects may occur:

• Pain in the form of isolated cramps or abdominal colic and diarrhea, with loss of fluids and minerals (electrolytes) more frequent in cases of severe constipation
• Rectal irritation

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Only take this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding if necessary and always under direct medical supervision.

Special warnings

Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven days. The use for longer periods of time requires a medical prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case. The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires medical intervention for diagnosis, prescription of drugs and surveillance during the course of therapy.

It is also advisable that elderly people or those in poor health conditions consult their doctor before using the medicine. The abuse of laxatives can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutritional factors. In the most severe cases of abuse, the onset of dehydration or hypokalemia is possible, which can lead to cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of simultaneous treatment of cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids.

The abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause addiction (and, therefore, possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony). In episodes of constipation, it is first of all recommended to correct eating habits by integrating the daily diet with an adequate intake of fiber and water. When using laxatives it is advisable to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water or other liquids a day, in order to favor the softening of the stool.
